We are looking at the best places to retire in the UK for 2018 and into 2019.

The data is taken from ‘Prudential’ who is a British multinational life insurance and financial services company.

55 counties in England and Wales were looked at and taken into consideration in the data.

The top counties in the UK to live in are:

  1. West Sussex
  2. Dorset
  3. East Sussex
  4. Isle of Wight
  5. Norfolk
  6. Devon
  7. Worcestershire
  8. Oxfordshire
  9. Somerset
  10. Shropshire

First and foremost, the South of England seems to be the go-to place for retirees!

Why West Sussex though? Let’s explore it…

Yes, that is correct, West Sussex topped the ranking, even beating the likes of the Isle of Wight and Dorset.

A quarter of the population living in West Sussex is over the age of 65. This is one of the highest concentrations of people over 65, beating the national average of around 18% per county.

When given a survey with regards to the happiness of the residents of West Sussex, over three-quarters rated their happiness as ‘high’.

So, what is it that makes West Sussex so good for retirees?

When Prudential looked at the Office for National Statistics and the Met Office, it found the following factors as reasons people rated their happiness as high:

  1. Disability-free life expectancy
  2. Healthcare access
  3. Increase of pensioners moving into the area
  4. Crime levels are low
  5. A decent average retiree income
  6. Better Weather
  7. Healthy Lifestyles

Stan Russell, a retirement income expert at Prudential, said:

“Counties like West Sussex and Dorset may be attractive because of their low crime rates or the quality of their health care. However, finding the right spot to live in such popular locations can be tricky.”

So, it does indeed look like the south of England is a great place to move if you are a retiree!

Be sure to take your time and look around before jumping into the move, which I’m sure you will!
